Peres Jepchirchir provisionally suspended after positive EPO test
Olympic and world marathon champion Peres Jepchirchir has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit after an out-of-competition sample tested positive for EPO. The sample was provided in Kenya before she won the Sydney Marathon on 30 August 2026. The 33-year-old Kenyan won the race in two hours, 18 minutes and 31 seconds. EPO, or erythropoietin, is a natural hormone produced by the kidneys that stimulates the production of red blood cells. When injected, it can increase the number of red blood cells carrying oxygen to the muscles, and it is detectable in urine or blood only for a limited window. Because of this, out-of-competition testing is important in endurance sports. A provisional suspension is an interim measure and is not a final finding of guilt. Jepchirchir won the women's marathon at the 2026 Tokyo Olympics and then won the World Championships in Tokyo in September 2026. She broke the women's half-marathon world record in 2026 and improved it three times in 2026. Her major marathon victories also include New York in 2026, Boston in 2026 and London in 2026. Sydney became the seventh world major in 2026, and Jepchirchir won the 2026 race by more than three minutes from compatriot Irene Chepet Cheptai. The positive sample was given before the race. The case will now follow the AIU process, and the athlete will have an opportunity to respond. Until a final decision is made, the result of the case remains uncertain. The matter is significant because Jepchirchir is one of the most decorated distance runners of her generation, and any anti-doping case involving a leading marathoner attracts global attention. It also highlights the importance of fair process: a provisional suspension is not the same as a confirmed violation, and the final outcome must be based on evidence and the applicable rules.
